Executive Director/Founder: Tiffany Goodwin founded Teaching Self Sufficiency through Education in 2011, with a mission to support and empower low-income families living in or under poverty line communities. Growing up in West Oakland, Tiffany can relate to the families in which TSE serve. Tiffany has more than 10 years of experience as a community organizer. She realized her passion for helping poverty stricken families within the urban community at a young age. She has been working in the nonprofit sector since the age of 13 as a volunteer for a family shelter in Hayward, CA. Prior to founding TSE, Tiffany served as the Director of Social Services at LIFESTEPS, Inc., a program dedicated to empowering and engaging low income families in the Bay Area.

Board Chair: William Ray attends Morning Star Church in Oakland, CA. He enjoys writing, drawing, painting, sculpturing and Bible Study. He also enjoys spending quality time with his 17 year old daughter. He has served as President of the School Site Council for Rancho Medanos Junior High School. He is a member of the District Advisory Council for Pittsburg, CA. Is is active in his community. He attended the Citizens University Seminar in Seattle Washington in March 2017. He believes in Volunteerism. He volunteers a least 4-6 hours a month at the Community's Salvation Army Center. From his own experience he knows that Education is essential to the uplifting of children in poverty. He joined TSE for just that reason. To help low-income families understand the benefits of Education

Board Secretary: Paula Woods is a native Oakland resident. She currently works as a supervisor in a call center in the hotel hospitality field. Paula became involved in TSE 2 years ago. As a single mother she understands the barriers that most of families face living in poverty stricken communities. She believes with the services TSE offers families can accomplish their personal goals which will help set the foundation for bigger goals they plan to accomplish in the future. Her favorite quote is "Each day brings new opportunities". 

Board Financial Advisor: Thelma Woods was born and raised in Oakland, CA. In 2008 she graduated with a B.S in chemistry for UC Berkeley. Thelma became involved with TSE 5 years ago through an volunteer opportunity. From 2008 to July 2015 she has had the opportunity to work in various jobs in the education and non profit field. She currently pursuing a Masters in Urban Education and a teaching credential in Chemistry from Holy Names University. She inspired by work ethic and determination of the families TSE works with. She believe with our services families can and will do the change narrative for low income families.

Board Member: Ashley is an energetic, experienced and accomplished professional with a proven record of intuitive and insightful leadership that fosters inclusion, team building, fiscal accountability and dynamic problem solving. Acknowledged throughout her career as a collaborative, transformative and inspirational leader with a reputation for advancing the organization’s mission.

Board Member: Serena Vandenbeg is a mission-driven professional with more than 7 years of experience in nonprofit finance and operations, fundraising, database management, and project management. She is passionate about working for organizations that create opportunities for underserved communities. She is detail-oriented, collaborative, and resourceful and enjoys helping organizations improve internal processes and procedures to increase effectiveness.

Board Secretary: Nikhil Rao is a dedicated hardworking individual based in Fremont, CA. He has an excellent background in leadership, multitasking, and organization & time management skills. He has collaborated with a team of DECA members to participate and win in NorCal and State level competitions, and is also a 2nd Degree Black Belt in TaeKwonDo martial arts. He believes education is a crucial resource that any individual should have whether they come from poverty or not. He is also optimistic about the services TSE has to offer for the families who desire to reach their goals. Some of the things he likes doing in his spare time include playing chess, day trading/investing, and making music.
